North Miami is considering new safety regulations for electric bicycles and other motorized devices as city leaders respond to concerns about safety on local streets and sidewalks.

The North Miami City Council voted on October 13 to advance a proposed ordinance introduced by Councilman Kevin A. Burns. The proposal aims to address safety concerns involving e-bike riders, pedestrians and motorists.

The proposed regulations are not yet law. The city must complete additional steps before any new local requirements take effect.

Why North Miami Is Considering New Rules

Electric bicycles and other motorized devices have become increasingly common throughout South Florida.

According to the city's October 16 announcement, the proposal responds to concerns about how these devices interact with pedestrians and motor vehicles.

Burns said his goal is to improve safety for everyone using North Miami's streets and neighborhoods.

What Happens Next?

North Miami officials announced plans to hold community meetings where residents will have opportunities to learn about the proposed regulations, ask questions and provide feedback.

After those meetings, the ordinance is expected to return to the City Council for final consideration and a vote.

As of this article's November 4 review, NoMi News has not independently confirmed a final adoption vote or an official schedule for the community meetings.

What Residents Should Know

Residents should distinguish North Miami's proposal from separate e-bike regulations approved by the City of Miami in October.

North Miami's proposal remains under consideration based on the official records reviewed.

Residents interested in the proposed changes should monitor upcoming City Council agendas and announcements for opportunities to participate.
